The Basics of GM-ing for Any System

  • Are you interested in becoming a GM (for any game system)?
  • Are you wondering what it takes to run a roleplaying game?
  • Do you have a little GM-ing experience, but want to see how others plan and run games?
  • Is a family member interested in the hobby and you’d like to engage with and support them on their gaming journey?

If the answer to any of the above is YES, then THIS is the workshop game for you!
While D&D is the system that will be used for the demo, the content we provide is applicable to virtually any RPG system.

In this content-rich 4-hour session, you will:

  • Play through a scenario, stopping for questions and discussion
  • Explore how the scenario was constructed – and how it might be expanded-upon to create a campaign
  • Talk about why game-running decisions were made
  • Touch on table and player management
  • Discover some resources that can help you on your journey

Come for the game, but STAY for the PRIZES! Gifts and prizes are awarded at each and every event!
As a bonus, we can also assist you with getting gaming groups started in your community, such as schools, rec and community centers, libraries, assisted living facilities, veterans’ organizations, and workplaces.

While gaming is a ton of fun, it can also be educational. Games can put history, science, literature, and math into context, help instill intellectual curiosity, support memory and mental acuity, and promote critical and strategic thinking, making it a fantastic activity for families, kids, and adults of all ages. There isn’t a better time to make RPGs (and other games!) to your funning repertoire!

This event is being presented at Midwest GameFest 2024.

Laura “Chick in the Hat” Croston

Laura began her gaming journey at the tender age of 7 when her father handed her a set of polyhedrals from the Blue Box. Her first character was a Magic User named Sparkle Starret who, with her illustrious familiar Abracatabra, delved into many dungeons and dealt with a few dragons.

After decades as a player (in a wide variety of systems), Laura discovered GM-ing in 2015. She’d been under the weird impression that becoming a GM involved either a death match with another GM, a musty ceremony with dribbly candles, secret handshakes, and chanting, or a “The Last Starfighter” sorta selection process, and was shocked to discover she could just declare herself a god and claim dominion over a world and its denizens. Who knew? Once she started GM-ing, she was hooked.
